Red Mountain Sky
Mountains have always been close to me, Scotland has many and I have spent much time in their shadows. I enjoy the dramatic atmosphere they create, especially in the mist. I love the fact that I can visit the same place many times and it can look so different, with the changing season’s, the light and the weather creating such a variety of images of the one place.
It is not surprising then that on a visit to Basel when I had the opportunity to participate in an informal tutorial using a palette knife for the first time, I chose to paint a mountain scene. My reason for using the red dramatic contrast in the sky was simple, I wanted the finished painting to hang in a particular spot in my home and red was the best choice.
I was not overly confident that the finished article would be good enough to hang on the wall. I found that I enjoyed using the palette knives and the texture I could create was surprising.
I was very pleased with the end result and once framed it was hung in the very spot it was created for. I have had many compliments about the painting and I enjoy the surprised looks from family and friends when I tell them that I painted it.
